How to Make a Vintage Text Effect in Photoshop

Photoshop Text Effects

When you want to get a vintage/retro style in text, there are various ways to get this look in Photoshop; but if you make a mistake or if you want to change the font or size later, welp, you're SOL. Which isn't great. Today, I will show you a very simple way to make a vintage text effect in Photoshop that you can later edit without having to make the whole effect again.

But before w begin, and if you want to follow this tutorial exactly as described, please download the following texture pack right here from Medialoot: Download

Step 1

Open Photoshop and make a new file at any size you want. In this case, I will make mine at 1800 x 1200 px with the Background color set to #e7c79b.

Step 2

Select the Horizontal Type Tool (T) and type your text using any font you want. In this case, I will be using "Kaoly Demo" at 280 pt with the color set to #ffddad.

Step 3

Go to Layer > Layer Styles > Blending Options. Be sure to check the "Layer Mask Hides Effects" option.

Step 4

Select the Drop Shadow option and apply the following settings.

Step 5

Click the "+" sign next to the Drop Shadow text to add another instance of the Drop Shadow effect and apply the following values.

Step 6

Click the "+" sign next to the Drop Shadow text to add another instance of the Drop Shadow effect and apply the following values.

Step 7

Click the "+" sign next to the Drop Shadow text to add another instance of the Drop Shadow effect and apply the following values.

Step 8

Click the "+" sign next to the Drop Shadow text to add another instance of the Drop Shadow effect and apply the following values.

Step 9

Lastly, click the "+" sign next to the Drop Shadow text to add another instance of the Drop Shadow effect, apply the following values and click OK in the Layer Style Panel.

Step 10

With the main text effect made, let's add a texture to give it some character. Go to File > Place. Locate the "Grunge-8.jpg" file on your computer and click the "Place" button.

Step 11

Adjust the texture to fill the entire artboard and press the Enter key on your keyboard to commit the changes.

Step 12

With the Texture layer selected, go to Layer > Arrange > Send Backward.

Step 13

Press Ctrl+A on your keyboard to select all and then press Ctrl+C to copy the selection.

Step 14

Select the Text layer and click on the "Add Layer Mask" icon in the Layers Panel.

Step 15

Hold the Alt key on your keyboard and click over the layer mask.

Step 16

Press Ctrl+V on your keyboard to paste the texture selection we did earlier.

Step 17

Again, hold the Alt key on your keyboard and click over the layer mask.

Step 18

Lastly, select the texture layer and set the layer blending mode to "Linear Burn" and bring down the opacity to 10%.

Conclusion

As you saw, making a retro/vintage text effect in Photoshop is very easy thanks to the stacked layer styles we can apply. By using this method, you can easily change the text size and font to your liking without having to make the effect again.
