Lightroom Preset for Film: Make Your Digital Look Like it Came From the Darkroom

Lightroom Film Effect

There are probably billion (estimating) ways in Lightroom to make your digital pictures look like they were taken with an analog camera. Of course the way you work with Lightroom to achieve your desired effect will depend on which film type you want to reproduce. Today, I will show you one quick and easy way to mimic a 35mm film effect in Lightroom to make your digital pictures look like they came right from the dark room.

But first, and if you want to follow this tutorial exactly as described, please download the following free image from Pixabay: Download.

Step 1

Open the picture in Lightroom.

Step 2

Go to the Develop tab and expand the Basic module.

Step 3

In the Basic module apply the following values.

Step 4

Now, expand the Tone Curve module. Drag the bottom left anchor point to 6,5 / 13% as shown.

Step 5

Now, drag the top right anchor point to 100 / 95,5%.

Step 6

Next, add 3 more anchoir points to the curve by clicking once over it at 28,5 / 29% - 52,5 / 51% and 80 / 74%.

Step 7

Expand the HSL module, and under Hue apply the following values.

Step 8

Click over the Saturation tab and apply the following values.

Step 9

Now expand the Detail module and apply the following settings.

Step 10

Expand the Effects modules and under the Post-Crop Vignetting be sure to select the "Paint Overlay" option from the dropdown menu.

Step 11

Apply the following values in the Effects module.
Note: The Grain Amount and Size could be changed to your liking, for this tutorial i am setting higher values for you to better notice the effect.

Step 12

Finally, under the Calibration module, decrease the Shadows to around -20, increase a bit the Hue of the Green Primary and decrease the Hue of the Blue Primary to around -10.

Step 13

With the Preset finished, a good idea is to save it for a future use on other pictures. To do that, click the "+" sign in the Presets Panel and then on Create Preset.

Step 14

In the New Develop Preset window, name your preset as you wish, select only the modules used as shown and click the Create button. The next time you want to use this effect, simply open your picture and click over the new 35mm Film preset.
