How to Make a Gritty Shadow Text Effect in Illustrator

Illustrator Text Effects

Although Illustrator is a powerful application for vector graphics, there are also some raster effects that we can use to make our vector graphics more appealing. Some of those raster effects are also present on Photoshop, so we can (somehow) emulate some Photoshop effects without leaving Illustrator. Today, I will show you how easily you can make a gritty shadow text effect on Illustrator using nothing but the default tools and effects.

Step 1

Open Illustrator and make a new file at any size you want. In this case, I will setup mine at 1800 x 1200 px.

Step 2

Select the Type Tool (T) and type your text using any font that you want. I will be using THE "HWT Artz" font at 250 pt.

Step 3

With the text selected, go to Type > Create Outlines.

Step 4

Now, go to Object > Compound Path > Make.

Step 5

Fill the text with any color that you like.

Step 6

Go to Window > Appearance. Click on the "Add New Fill" icon and set the Fill Color to White.

Step 7

Now click on the "Add New Effect" icon and from the dropdown menu select Distort & Transform > Transform. Apply the following settings and click OK.

Step 8

Go to Object > Expand Appearance.

Step 9

Now go to Object > Ungroup.

Step 10

Next, go to Object > Blend > Make.

Step 11

Click on the "Isolate Selected Object" icon on the top toolbar.

Step 12

Select the white text behind. In the Appearance Panel click on the "Opacity" text, set the Opacity to 0% and exit Isolation Mode by double clicking anywhere outside the canvas area.

Step 13

Lastly, with the object selected, go to Effect >Texture > Grain. Apply the following settings and click OK.
Note: depending on your text and document size you may need to change these values a bit.
