How to Easily Warp Text Into any Shape in Illustrator

Shaping Text in Illustrator

In Illustrator, there are countless ways to warp a text into a shape — but they're not all created equal. Some methods simply don't give you good control over your text, others require you to convert your text to curves so you can no longer edit it. Don't worry, today I'll show you a very easy and simple method to warp your text into any shape while keeping the text fully editable (all in less than 5 minutes).

Step 1

Open Illustrator and make a new file at any size you want. In this case, I will set up my document at 1800 x 1200 px.

Step 2

Select the Type Tool (T) and type your text using any font you want. I will be using "HighVoltage Rough" at a size of 370pt.

Step 3

Select the Pen Tool (P) and draw any kind of shape you want like this simple bow-tie like shape.

Step 4

Although the shape is on top of our text (because we draw it after we typed the text) just to be 110% sure that it is on top, go to Object > Arrange > Bring to Front.

Step 5

Go to Select > All (or press Ctrl+A on your keyboard) in order to select the text and the shape.

Step 6

Go to Object > Envelope Distort > Make with Top Object.

Step 7

Even now that our text is warped into a shape, we can still edit it as we normally edit the text in Illustrator. Simply double click over the text and make any changes you like.
