Create Your Own Gorgeous Poster Mockup for Free!

Free Poster Mockup in Photoshop

Making a good first impression when presenting your designs to a client or even for a personal project that you plan to show on your social media channels might be *the most* important. As a designer, you may face a situation when you only have the design but not the physical product where your design will be used. This could happen with a magazine a packing or even with a poster. So today, I'll show you how easily you can make your own poster mockup in Photoshop and use it an unlimited number of times for any of your projects and for free.

But before we begin, and if you want to follow this tutorial exactly as described please download the following free image from Pexels: Download

Step 1

Open the image you want to use as a mockup in Photoshop. It could be any kind of image, even a picture taken with your phone with a blank space for you to place your design.

Step 2

Select the Rectangle Tool (U). Be sure to have in the top toolbar the mode set to "Shape" and draw a rectangle (using a white color) over the area that will be used for our mockup (in this case, the inner part of the frame).

Step 3

Go to Layer > Duplicate Layer. Name this layer as "Poster Image" and click OK.

Step 4

With the "Poster Image" layer selected, go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object.

Step 5

Go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask.

Step 6

Select the Background Layer and go to Layer > Duplicate Layer. Name this Layer as "Shadows" and click OK.

Step 7

With the "Shadows" layer selected, go to Layer > Arrange > Bring to Front.

Step 8

Go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.

Step 9

Go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask.

Step 10

Go to Layer > Duplicate Layer. Name this layer as "Lights" and click OK.

Step 11

Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Apply the following values and click OK.

Step 12

In the Layers Panel, set the blending mode of the "Lights" layer to Screen and bring down the opacity to 25%.

Step 13

Select the "Shadows" layer. In the Layers Panel, set the blending mode to Multiply and bring down the opacity to 75%.

Step 14

Select the "Poster Image" layer and double click on the layer thumbnail. Alternatively you can right click on the layer and from the dropdown menu select "Edit Contents".

Step 15

In the new opened document, go to File > Place. Locate your poster image on your computer and click on Place.

Step 16

Reposition the image if needed and hit the Enter key on your keyboard to commit the changes.

Step 17

Go to File > Save and then close the Smart Object File. As you can see, your poster is now placed in the original file.

Step 18

Finally, with the "Poster Image" layer selected, set the blending mode to "Multiply" and bring down the opacity to 95% in the Layers Panel.

Some Final Notes

Now that you have your own Poster Mockup ready, you can easily change the poster design. Simply double click on the "Poster Image" layer thumbnail, place your new design on the new document, save it and close it.
