How to Put Anything on a Shirt Texture Background

Place any design over a t-shirt texture

We've shown you how to create an editable t-shirt mockup in Photoshop. Today, we've got a slightly different method: how to put anything in a shirt texture background. Of course there are different ways to achieve a great looking end result, but this one is simple, effective and can be done in less than 10 minutes.

All you need is a background texture (could be any close up picture of a t-shirt fabric) and the design you want to put on it. For this tutorial, I will be using a picture taken with a phone and one of the vintage logo templates that you can find here at Medialoot.

Step 1

Open the t-shirt texture in Photoshop.

Step 2

Go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.

Step 3

Go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Set the Brightness to 40, the Contrast to 15 and click OK.
Note: depending on your image you may need to adjust these values a bit.

Step 4

Go to File > Save. Save this file as “Displacement Map” anywhere on your computer.

Step 5

Go to Layer > Duplicate Layer. Set the name of this layer to “Overlay Texture” and click OK.

Step 6

Go to Image > Adjustments > Invert.

Step 7

Again, go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Set the Brightness to -45, the Contrast to 20 and click OK.
Note: depending on your image you may need to adjust these values a bit.

Step 8

Set the layer Blend Mode to Screen and reduce the opacity to 50%.

Step 9

Select the Background Layer and go to File > Place. Locate the image that you want to put over the t-shirt texture and click Place. In this case, I will be using one of the Vintage Logo Templates available here at Medialoot with a custom color scheme.

Step 10

Resize and/or move your image as you want it to appear on the texture and hit the Enter key on your keyboard to commit the changes.

Step 11

Set the Blend Mode of your design layer to Multiply and reduce the Opacity to 98%.

Step 12

Go to Filter > Distort > Displace. Set the Horizontal and Vertical Scale to 2 and click OK. Locate the “Displacement Map” file we saved and click Open.
Note: depending on your image you may need to change a bit these values.

Step 13

Go to Filter > Distort > Ripple. Set the Amount to 20%, the Size to Small and click OK.
Note: depending on your image you may need to change a bit these values.

Step 14

Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Set the Amount to 5%, the Distribution to Gaussian, be sure to check Monochromatic and click OK.

Step 15

Select the “Overlay Texture” layer and go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask.

Step 16

Select the Background layer and go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast. Name this layer as “Brightness/Contrast” and click OK.

Step 17

Lastly, set the Brightness to 30, the Contrast to 5 and be sure to check “Use Legacy”.
