How to Make a Random Pattern Fill in Photoshop

Photoshop Patterns

Patterns are one of the most important resources a designer can use. Of course there are tons of different ways to make them, either in Illustrator or in Photoshop. Although they're a bit more time consuming to make in Photoshop rather than in Illustrator, sometimes for whatever reason (particular software requirements or a request from your client) we have no choice but to make them in Photoshop. Fortunately, instead of going through a more complicated process to make a pattern in Photoshop, there's an easy way to make them in less than 5 minutes using some of the Photoshop Fill options that can help you fill your background with a pattern randomly made from any image that you want.

Step 1

Open the image you want to make it a pattern in Photoshop, in this case i will be using a .png leave image with a transparent background. Be sure that your image have a transparent background, otherwise clean up the image before you proceed.

Step 2

To give us more room to test our pattern, go to Image > Canvas Size. Set the Width and Height between 150% and 200% and click OK.

Step 3

Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and draw a selection around the image.

Step 4

With the selection active go to Edit > Define Pattern. Give the new pattern a name and click OK.

Step 5

Press Ctrl+D to deselect the image and hide the current layer in the Layers Panel.

Step 6

Go to Layer > New > Layer. Name this layer as Pattern 1 and click OK.

Step 7

Go to Edit > Fill. Under Contents select "Pattern".

Step 8

Click on the Custom Pattern thumbnail and select the recently created pattern.

Step 9

Check the Script option, select "Random Fill" and click OK.

Step 10

In the Random Fill window apply the following settings and click OK.

Step 11

Go to Layer > New > Layer. Name this layer as Pattern 2 and click OK.

Step 12

Again, go to Edit > Fill. Under Contents select "Pattern", be sure to have your pattern selected, the "Script" option enabled with the "Random Fill" option and click OK.

Step 13

In the Random Fill window apply the following settings and click OK.

Step 14

Repeat those 3 last steps as many times as you want and changing the settings as you like.

Step 15

When you finish, and just to give a nice touch to the pattern, select the top layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow. Apply the following settings and click OK.
