How to Make a Circular Maze in Illustrator

Illustrator Tips & Tricks

You might think an intricately designed maze is complicated to make, but it doesn't have to be. When you see a very decorative pattern or a complicated background it is often made using a simple process with the right tools, and mazes are no exception to this rule. Today, I'll show you a simple technique (of many different ones you may use) to easily make a Circular Maze in Illustrator in less than 10 minutes.

Step 1

Open Illustrator and make a new file at any size you want. In this case i will make mine at 1800 x 1200 px.

Step 2

In the Tools Panel, select the Polar Grid Tool.

Step 3

Click once over the Artboard to open the Polar Grid Tool options window.

Step 4

In the Polar Grid Tool window apply the following settings and click OK.
Note: you can set any size and any amount of concentic and radial dividers that you want for your final maze. In this case, i will setup mine to have 6 concentric dividers and 9 radial dividers with a 900 px size so you can easily see how this technique works.

Step 5

Go to Window > Stroke and set the stroke weight to 30 pt (or any other value that you wish).

Step 6

Go to Object > Expand. Be sure to have the Stroke option selected and click OK.

Step 7

Go to Window > Pathfinder and click on the Divide icon.

Step 8

Go to Object > Ungroup.

Step 9

In the Tools Panel, pick the Selection Tool (V), select the outer circle and delete it.

Step 10

Press Ctrl+A on your keyboard to select all elements.

Step 11

Go to Object > Path > Clean Up and click OK.

Step 12

Select all the outer rectangular shapes and delete them.

Step 13

Now simply start selecting all the unwanted parts in the maze and delete them.

Step 14

With all the unwanted parts deleted, press Ctrl+A on your keyboard to select all the remaining elements.

Step 15

Lastly, go to Window > Pathfinder and click on the Unite icon.
