How to Easily Make an Embossed Layer Style in Photoshop

Photoshop Layer Styles

In Photoshop there are many options to make effects like debossing and embossing. Often used on business cards, these effects should be in every designer's toolbox. Of course, you can replicate this effect from scratch each time you need it, but to save some time a good idea is to have this effect available at a click of the mouse by making a Layer Style. So today, I will show you how you can make an Embossed Layer Style in Photoshop so you can use it anytime over any graphic that you need without having to setup the embossed effect every single time.

But before we begin, and if you want to follow this tutorial exactly as described, please download the following set of Letterpress Paper Textures right here at Medialoot: Download

Step 1

Open Photoshop and make a new file at any size that you want. In this case, I will setup mine to 1800 x 1200 px.

Step 2

Go to File > Place. Locate the "letterpress-paper-1.jpg" file on your computer and click on Place.

Step 3

Arrange the texture to cover your whole artboard and hit the Enter key on your keyboard to commit the changes.

Step 4

Select the Type Tool (T) and type any text using any font that you want. Here, I will simply write "Emboss" using the Bahnschrift" font at 400 pt.

Step 5

With the text layer selected, set the Fill Opacity in the Layers Panel to 0%.

Step 6

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Bevel & Emboss effect and apply the following settings.
Note: You may adjust the Shadow Opacity as you wish depending on how noticeable you want the effect.

Step 7

Check the Contour effect and click over the contour thumbnail to edit it.

Step 8

In the Contour Editor add a new anchor point by clicking anywhere on the curve. Set the Input value to 50 %, the Output value to 70 % and click OK.

Step 9

Check the Inner Shadow effect and apply the following values.

Step 10

Now, select the Drop Shadow effect and apply the following values.
Note: Here you may adjust the Opacity, Distance and Size as you wish depending on how noticeable you want the effect.

Step 11

Click the "+" sign of the Drop Shadow effect to add a new drop shadow instance and apply the following settings.
Note: Again, you may adjust the Opacity, Distance and Size as you wish depending on how noticeable you want the effect.

Step 12

Again, click the "+" sign of the Drop Shadow effect to add a new drop shadow instance and apply the following settings.

Step 13

Lastly, and to finish our embossed effect, click the "+" sign of the Drop Shadow effect again to add a new drop shadow instance and apply the following settings.

Step 14

Before clicking Ok to apply the embossed effect to our text, a good idea is to save the embossed style we've just created (so that we can use it later over any other text or graphic without to setup the layer style again), to do that, click on the "New Style" button. Give the style a name and click OK in the New Style window. Now, the embossed style is present on the Styles Panel ready to be used later with a simple click.

Step 15

Now, click OK in the Layer Style window to apply the recently create embossed effect to our text.

Some Final Words

As you may see, making an embossed effect in Photoshop is really simple by using layer styles, and the best part of it is that you can later use this effect over any other text or graphic that you want simply by selecting the corresponding layer and clicking on the Embossed Layer Style in the Styles Panel.
