How to Easily Draw Complex Mandalas in Photoshop

Drawing in Photoshop

Mandalas (which in Sanskrit means Circle) have been used for a long time to facilitate meditation. Today, coloring a Mandala is recommended to focus your attention, express your creative side and help relieve stress. Even though you can find thousands of Mandalas on internet to colorize, making your own in Photoshop is very easy and can be made in less than 5 minutes if you use the right tools. Today, I will show you how easily you can draw your own mandalas in Photoshop to later print or color them directly in Photoshop.

But before we begin, please keep in mind that this technique only allow the use of the Pencil or Brush Tool to work, so don't expect to have a perfect clean line on your design, and instead think on it as a hand made design with little imperfections here and there that add a personal touch and character to your design.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and make a new file at any size you want. In this case, i will make mine at 1800 x 1800 px.

Step 2

Select the Brush Tool (B).

Step 3

In the top toolbar, set any brush size that you want and click on the "Set Symmetry Options for Painting" icon, then from the dropdown menu select the "Mandala" option.

Step 4

In the Mandala Symmetry window, set any number of segments that tou want (from 3 to 10) and click OK. In this case, I will setup mine with 8 segments.

Step 5

If needed, scale the guide template and hit the enter key on your keyboard to commit the changes.

Step 6

Go to Layer > New > Layer. Name the layer as "Mandala" and click OK.

Step 7

With the brush tool still selected, be sure to have the "Mandala" layer selected and start painting.
Note: You only need to paint on any of the available segments and Photoshop will mirror the painted area in the other ones.

Step 8

Paint small portions on any segment and the design will be reflected on all the other ones.

Step 9

Keep painting until you are happy with the end result.

Step 10

Select the Background layer and again go to Layer > New >Layer. Name this layer as "Colors" and click OK.

Step 11

With the Brush Tool (B) still selected, pick any Foreground color you want and start painting on the "Colors" layer.
Note: You only need to paint on any of the available segments and Photoshop will mirror the painted area in the other ones.

Step 12

Feel free to change the foreground color at any time and keep painting until you are happy with the end result.
