Easily Make an Editable Grunge Stamp Text Effect in Photoshop

Photoshop Text Effects

Making a Stamp effect in Photoshop is easy, so you've probably seen a lot of differing methods to get that look. But today, I will show you a super-easy way to make a stamp effect in Photoshop where the text can be edited after you apply the effect (and the texture we'll use can be scaled or moved to achieve a whole new texture effect).

But before we begin, and if you want to follow this tutorial exactly as described, please download the following resources right here at Medialoot:

Step 1

Open Photoshop and make a new file at any size you want. In this case I will make mine at 1800 x 1200 px.

Step 2

Go to File > Place. Locate any of the paper textures from the Recycled Paper Textures pack and click the Place button. In this case, I will use the "recycled-paper-8" texture.

Step 3

Select the Horizontal Type Tool (T) and type your text using any font you wish. For this tutorial, I will be using "Rift Soft Bold" at 450pt.

Step 4

With the text layer selected, go to Layer > Layer Style > Inner Shadow. Apply the following settings and be sure to select the "Gaussian" contour from the Contour dropdown thumbnails menu.

Step 5

Check the Inner Glow effect. Apply the following settings, be sure to select the "Half Round" contour from the Contour dropdown thumbnails menu and click OK.

Step 6

With the text layer still selected, press Ctrl+G on your keyboard to place this layer inside a Layer Group.

Step 7

With the Layer Group selected, go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options. Set the Blend Mode to Multiply and, while holding the Alt key on you keyboard, drag the white Underlying Layer slider to the left until you reach a value of 230 and click OK.

Step 8

Open any of the textures included in the Rusty Metal Textures pack. I will be using the "rusty-metal-8" texture, but you are free to use any texture you want.

Step 9

In the texture window, go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.

Step 10

Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Apply the following values and click OK.

Step 11

Go to Select > All. Then go to Edit > Copy.

Step 12

Back in the original file, go to Edit > Paste. Optionally, resize and reposition the texture to your liking.

Step 13

With the texture layer selected, go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask.

Step 14

Lastly, set the texture layer Blending Mode to "Hard Mix" and bring down the Fill to about 80%.

Some Final Tips

If you later want to change the text font, size and position you can do it as you normally do in Photoshop because with this technique, the text remain fully editable. Also, if you want to change the texture position, simply select the texture layer and drag it anywhere you like.
